Ways to help

Reception Volunteer

Front Desk volunteers are vital to IRC operations, greeting each and every person who visits the office, and assisting them with whatever they may need (e.g. directing clients to staff members for meetings, accepting payments, answering basic questions about services). Volunteers are also in charge of answering the main phone line and transferring calls/messages to staff members, as well as receiving and occasionally processing donations (both monetary and in-kind).

The IRC houses a “Resettlement Store” where refugees can shop for donated items such as clothing, household goods, toys, kitchenware, and linens. We always need people to help process in-kind donations and keep the shop organized. Due to COVID-19 precautions, our "store" is currently closed but we are delivering donations to clients. We currently need volunteers to help sort and organize donations and bring them to clients' homes.

Items we need now

Items needed for refugees in Charlottesville

Effective September 1, 2021 - we are pausing all donated items except gift cards for the month of September. We are so overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we have received from the Charlottesville community that we need a little time to distribute these items and make space for new contributions. If you are leading a group donation drive, we will gladly accept your contributions.  Please reach out to the IRC staff member with whom you have been coordinating.   Current Greatest Need:  Gift cards (Kroger, Food Lion, Walmart, Amazon). Gift cards give families who have lost everything agency to purchase the things that would make them feel most at home in our community; the clothes they like to wear, their favorite foods, etc.  This small gesture goes a long way to helping restore people's dignity and sense of self-worth.  We recommend these stores because they are accessible to our families by bus or online. Mail or deliver gift cards to 609 East Market Street, Suite 104 (our office entrance is on 7th Street).   Please check back after October 1 for an updated list of our current needs.  Thank you for standing with refugees.  If you have any questions, please reach us at [email protected].
