Our mission

To promote, establish and preserve sustainable communities for healthy aging that benefit individuals and families of all ages.
Opportunities

Help a Neighbor Access Food

Your senior neighbors need help getting access to nutrition services! JABA works to bridge food inequity gaps by providing access to healthy food, and volunteers are needed to help make this possible.

Volunteer Options Include:

  • Deliver emergency food boxes for seniors to have on hand (Albemarle).
  • Transport meals to community centers on Wednesday & Thursday mornings (Charlottesville City to Greene County).
  • Assist seniors shopping in-store (current need Charlottesville, waitlist other counties).
  • Curbside Pickup/Deliver groceries to seniors (current need Charlottesville, waitlist other counties).

Advisory Role to Support Older Adults - Louisa

Do you have a passion for older adult and caregiver services? Join JABA’s Advisory Council to share your passion and move us forward as a community.

Council Members provide insight on JABA’s planning documents and budget, while sharing about aging and caregiver services within their community.

Advisory Council Particulars:

  • Meetings are held once a month 12pm-2pm, generally on Thursdays.
  • Members commit to a minimum requirement of 2 hours every other month.
  • Virtual meetings are conducted over Zoom until further notice.
  • Must be a Louisa County resident and 18 years or older.
  • Applications from seniors or caregivers encouraged!

FISH (Friends in Schools Helping) Program Mentor

Gift students an hour of your time by working with children who need extra support, either emotionally or academically. JABA’s FISH (Friends in Schools Helping) Program matches students one-on-one or in small groups with adult mentors to help them thrive.

Insurance Counseling Team - Counselor, Greeter/Receptionist, Intake Call Specialist

JABA offers free unbiased one-on-one insurance counseling (now via Zoom or by phone) that guides older adults and individuals with disabilities through complicated Medicare questions. We also screen individuals for benefit programs and provide information about how to guard against fraud. Join the team as a Counselor, Greeter/Receptionist, or Intake Call Specialist.

Friendly Calling Volunteer and/or PenPal

Spend your time with a senior or adult with disability who could use a neighborly call or letter. Callers spend an average of one hour per week talking with their Neighbor, and PenPals send letters/art/cards to a staff member who distributes them to seniors in the area. There may be a waitlist for Friendly Calling positions.

Special Projects Volunteer

Do you have a certain skill you really want to use in a volunteer role but can’t find an opportunity that is a good fit? Get in touch! We’d love to learn about what you want out of a volunteering role, as staff often have special projects that could use volunteer support. We also accept interns if their internship requirements align with staff needs.

Louisa County Commission on Aging (COA) Board Member

JABA works closely with COA to gain insight on the aging community and inform decisions on transportation, medical care, and caregiving. The COA fulfills this mission by working with residents and community organizations like JABA to understand the needs of older adults and their caregivers, supporting local aging-related events, holding monthly public meetings and reporting its findings to the Louisa County Board of Supervisors. COA is searching for a volunteer board member who lives in Louisa County to participate in in-person monthly meetings, attend events, and promote COA in the community. Workshop Co-Leader

Receive training to be part of a two-person team leading groups of about ten adults as they develop skills to better cope with their chronic health conditions. Workshops meet once per week for six weeks. Each session is highly scripted, so you don’t have to guess what to do. There may be a waitlist for this position.

Activity Leader

Offer smiles and a helping hand to seniors at one of JABA’s Community Senior Centers or Adult Care Centers through virtual activity leading. You can assist others with crafts projects, lead a sing-along, help with gentle exercise classes, and so much more through recording videos, conference calls, or Zoom.

Administrative Support

Volunteers provide administrative support to JABA programs on a weekly, monthly or seasonal basis across various departments. Tasks may include data entry, scheduling appointments, filing, administering surveys, preparing packets or mailings, and more. There may be a waitlist for this position.

JABA offers information and a wide range of services that help older adults and individuals with disabilities remain active in the community. JABA serves older adults, individuals with disabilities and caregivers at all income levels in Charlottesville, and Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson counties.
